I was delighted to have a second chance to judge BTs and Minis at Crufts, after my 2000 appointment took place in early recovery from a brain tumour. That said, I was very sorry this second invitation only arose due to the unexpected death of David Harrison (Sandawana), who was originally due to judge and must pay tribute to David and mourn his passing.
The day was full-on, starting Minis promptly at 9:00am and not finishing BTs until just before 5:00pm, with only 20 minutes break in between. Many thanks to MBT exhibitors for presenting a record entry of 92 (for the record: in 2000 I had 41 dogs, making 46 entries with 1 absent). Of these an incredible 48 had travelled from overseas, with a further 7 resident in the UK but bred overseas. Of the 92 there were just 7 absentees. There was genuine depth of quality to choose from in all classes which demonstrates the strength of the breed both in the UK and across Europe, particularly at this level. I am very grateful to those committed enough to make the effort to travel from abroad and was, therefore, all the more disappointed to learn that someone has lodged an official complaint with the KC because my BOB from Germany, whose owner speaks little English, had inadvertently entered in PG rather than Open Dog. The saddest part is that I understand the complaint was instigated, if not actually lodged, by a UK exhibitor – it takes all sorts! While nothing can take away the fact that he was judged to be my best dog on the day and that he looked fantastic as he strutted his stuff around the Group, I’m dumbfounded to think there are some mean-spirited enough to set-out to spoil their special day. Whilst I fully understand that he may have been over-qualified to enter PG (the small print isn’t easy, particularly in a foreign language), the error would have made absolutely no difference to the outcome – it was theoretically harder to win top honours from the lesser class he entered! In other words, I would have ‘found’ him regardless of which class he’d come from!
On a brighter note; things took an interesting turn when, unexpectedly, I was asked if I would mind if Prince Michael of Kent and his entourage, who were running ahead of schedule, could come into the ring between classes and have a chat with me as the judge and exhibitors - I wasn’t aware that the Prince does this every year in his role as President of the KC. Needless to say that he was charming and chatted for some time to a number of exhibitors coming in for JB, making a very memorable interlude for us all.
All of the above said, it cannot be denied that I was extremely pleased to award DCC and BOB to WILKE’S FUTURE STAR VOM HAUSE WILKE, BCC to MCGREGOR’S CH GWENEVERE MERLINDAN VON AMADIS and BP to DEUTSCHMANN-CIRILLO’S INTO DARKNESS VOM HAUSE WILKE.

1st INT/GER/LUX/B/IR CH EASY RIDER OF SLANTING SHORE (SM SALEWSKI-MIELCHEN)
A strong win for this handsome black brindle and white shown in beautiful condition at a young 7.5 years. Strong head, good reach of neck into correct shoulder and topline, Strong well angulated quarters, although the tail-set is just a little high he moved very well behind, showing like a bomb from start to finish.
2nd INT/FI/EE/LV CH EGER-VARI MINI EGON HEJW-10 BALTW-12 HEW-12 (ATC AU01802HUN) (MISS A AESCHLIMANN)
Masculine and typy white. Although over the measure, but at 9 years old has a strong head, with excellent bone and substance.

1st MOOLTI POCKET TOP GUN FOR BULLTER EGO (ATC AV00413RUS) (MRS V L CHESALOVA)
Very smart tricolour. Although just over the measure and would like more head, has a correct mouth, is in excellent condition with lovely make and shape, with a good shoulder and shapely quarters, showing well throughout.

1st LUKE VON DER ALTEN VESTE (ATCAU01786DEU) (G SCHERZER)
Extremely smart and typy black brindle and white with a beautiful head with an unbroken arc, width, fill, depth, turn, correct mouth and good expression. Only young, he didn’t co-operate well with his handler and just failed to make the best of himself: a good topline and shapely quarters and, although not easy to assess, appeared to go well on the move.
2nd INTO DARKNESS VOM HAUSE WILKE (ATCAU01847DEU) (S DEUTSCHMANN-CIRILLO)
Very smart and well-balanced almost solid bb+w with a masculine, strong head in profile and wicked expression, just losing out to the winner’s width and fill. A good front, excellent bone and substance and shapely quarters, not quite the bend of stifle as above. BP
3rd I FELL GOOD VOM HAUSE WILKE (ATCAU01736DEU) (M WILKE)
Very smart solid brindle. Correct size, with a good head and correct mouth. Good shoulder, not quite the front of 2 and tail set a little high.

A difficult class because of the diverse range of types. All pushing the measure, but all of them good, albeit for different reasons – the winner took the class with ease but, of the others, I’d happily trade places on different days and tweaked performances.
1st FUTURE STAR VOM HAUSE WILKE (ATCAT00055DEU) (M WILKE)
Outstanding, almost solid tricolour with a good topline, standing four square. Straight front, just toes out very slightly. Super head with width, fill, depth and finish. Great condition and moving beautifully, perhaps the best rear action of the day. Excellent bone and substance making a corking ‘bull terrier in miniature’ and a very worthy overall winner. DCC BOB
2nd SIR CHUCK VOM KAISERSTUHL (ATCAT02649DEU) (MRS A SCHMIDT)
Very smart white with a beautiful head, good eye, finish and correct mouth. Good shoulder and decent topline; although moved true behind, he lost out on angulation to the winner
3rd GIFFENBULL LIGHT MY FIRE AT ARCANUM (MRS H E WARDLE)
Very smart red and white youngster. Typy and masculine with lovely strong head, good expression and finish. Good bone and substance. Little long at this stage, losing out to above in topline.

A tough class with excellent depth of quality, many pushing hard for the top places. Although all placings had plenty of virtue, as ever, the counterpoints had to be weighed in the balance to split the difference.
1st ALOUKANNA HOLD YOUR FIRE (MR M DODWELL)
Although this lovely, masculine black brindle and white was well over the measure, he was well handled and showing beautifully. Very typy with a lovely deep, strong head, good expression and finish – unfortunately a fully instanding canine. Tons of bone and substance with a good front, decent shoulder and shapely quarters, moving with drive.
2nd A MINI RUMPUS NANOOK BEAR (MR J & MISS S KOCABA & WHITE)
Powerful and upstanding white, winning a tough place on his superb masculine type, with a beautiful, powerful, masculine head with excellent down-face and punishing expression. Although his mouth has moved towards level, it’s nothing to worry about, although would ask his very caring owners to have his teeth cleaned – at this level the little things make a difference. Also over the measure, plenty of bone and substance, good spring of rib, correct topline into shapely quarters, moving well behind.
3rd BULLYON READY TO MEASURE (MR M & MRS J PHILLIPS)
Very pleasing and typy white (unfortunately leaving the ring before completing my critique), with a knock-out head and punishing expression. Well arced and turned with super width and fill, unfortunately carrying slightly more than a full reverse bite. Also a little over, he is well balanced with lovely clean lines, beautifully presented and handled. Again, weighing the delicate scales, not the bone or rear angulation of 2.

Quality masculine well-filled head without exaggeration, being good in profile, decent width, fill, turn and a lovely expression. Long neck and into well set shoulders, good front and feet, toes out slightly. Good short-back and top line into shapely quarters, moving well both ways. RDCC
2nd MINI COOPER OF SPIRIT AMAROK (ATCAV00930PRT) (PEREIRA MR)
Very handsome brindle and white who pushed really hard for top spot. Very typy with strong well-arced head with width and fill – level bite. Shapely neck, good shoulder and topline, feet a little untidy. Well angulated quarters and moving very well behind, just pushing the measure.
3rd BULLYON REDEFINING MEASURE WITH KHLOLANDER (MS A & MR P O'NEILL & HOHMUTH)
Very typy red and white with a beautiful, clean masculine head with a wicked eye and roman finish. Another pushing hard, but having to be critical to split the difference, not the shoulder and angulation of 2.

2nd DUVESSA SAHARA AT BILLABARRA (MRS K & MR H COX)

Upstanding black brindle and white with a lovely feminine head in profile and having width, fill and a good dark eye, if a little large, with a correct mouth. 2nd KAJA-DOTTIE VON DER ALTEN VESTE (MISS R JONES)
Attractive all-white, well balanced and good for size. Strong head with, unfortunately, two instanding canines. Standing four-square she is a little upright but moved well both ways.

A strong win in a good class. Very shapely solid brindle standing four-square. A good head, correct mouth, good topline, front and feet. Undercarriage a little loose and would like a tad more bend of stifle. Moved well both ways.
2nd JENKIR KALLISTO (MRS J HARRISON)
Attractive typy black brindle and white with lovely clean lines. A strong feminine head with good profile, showing arc and turn, a good mouth (helping here with a high proportion of mouth faults) and well-shaped dark eye. Decent shoulder, elbows could be tighter, with shapely quarters and good tail carriage.

Very attractive brindle and white oozing feminine quality, with the most beautiful typy head from every angle: arc, finish width and depth, with a wicked dark eye and well-set ear carriage making a glorious expression. Lovely clean lines, would like better shoulder which just affects her topline, however, this immediately diminishes when she really gets on her toes. Well angulated quarters and rather high set tail, moving adequately behind. Took the class on her exquisite head and expression, which is a pleasure to behold. RBCC

Feminine black brindle and white in lovely condition and showing well throughout. Just losing out in outline and substance to the winner.

1st FIRST CLASS VOM HAUSE WILKE (ATCAT00040DEU) (M WILKE)
3rd MYSIBUL'S PRASING GRACE ( MISS S ANDREWS)
Quality bitch with a feminine head, one instanding canine. Typy, with an adequate front and just a little upright. Shapely quarters moving reasonably well.

1st BULLRICHS KISS ME (ATCAU01058DEU) (MR M KAESTNER)
Very attractive brindle and white oozing feminine quality, with the most beautiful typy head from every angle: arc, finish width and depth, with a wicked dark eye and well-set ear carriage making a glorious expression. Lovely clean lines, would like better shoulder which just affects her topline, however, this immediately diminishes when she really gets on her toes. Well angulated quarters and rather high set tail, moving adequately behind. Took the class on her exquisite head and expression, which is a pleasure to behold. RBCC
2nd DECADANCE DESTINEE BULLYPINS (MRS D, MR A & MRS M DANCE & LLEWELLYN)
Very typy and feminine balck brindle and white who pushed hard. Good strong head with lovely profile, having arc, finish and correct mouth – would just like a smaller eye. Good topline and shapely quarters, moving adequately and showing well.
3rd KINGA BONSAI VON AMADIS JCH GER BJS'16 (ATCAT01116DEU) (D BROMMONT-LOTHARY)
Feminine brindle and white with a good, strong feminine well-filled head with a good dark eye and expression. Not the shoulder of above and a little long, not helped when leaning into the lead. Covered the ground well as she got into her stride.
